Hello fellow pet lovers! Shadrach and I want to make sure that you understand that the only essential oils we talk about and refer to here are Young Living Essential Oils Below is our description of what a therapeutic grade essential oil is and why you want to be using these in your own health and pet care.

Are You Using Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils?

For those of you who have read my article “Essential Oils and MRSA” you know that essential oils are being used and researched as a way to fight the ever virulent MRSA. What you may not know though is that it is vitally important that you know that your oils are therapeutic or aromatherapy grade oils ONLY.

A fine wine and therapeutic grade essential oils are grown, harvested and distilled in much the same way. Soil conditions, fertilizers (organic or chemical), climate, altitude, methods of harvesting, pesticides, time of year harvested, and distillation all determine if an essential oil is therapeutic grade or industrial grade.

Here’s something you may not know: most oils on the market today (i.e. in your drugstores, supermarkets, and most health food stores) are NOT therapeutic grade although they may state on the bottle that they are 100% pure. The reason they can say that is because while the oils were obtained from the right places, the process to obtain them and the synthetics added to bring a greater yield make them really nothing more than perfume. Once you change anything about this delicate process, you can render the oils useless for any healing properties and benefits.

Therapeutic grade is slow distilled, at the lowest possible temperatures, typically distilled in stainless steel, at very low pressure all to keep the integrity of the oils chemical proponents intact and at their fullest potency. If these oils are obtained from plants grown in chemical-laden soils, chemical fertilizers, distilled in copper or aluminum, at high temperatures and fast, all of these can ruin and destroy the valuable chemical components in the oils. Even worse, with synthetics added to essential oils, they can cause problems in users such as skin irritations, burns, allergies and can be very toxic. In effect, anything less than pure therapeutic grade essential oils are not worth paying for unless you just want a perfume, and not especially to use in helping combat MRSA.

According to aromatherapist Kristen Leigh Bell in her article Holistic Aromatherapy for the Pampered Pooch Aroma Leigh essential oils should only be obtained “from a small company or individual that sells aromatherapy-grade therapeutic EOs.” Please don’t run the risk of doing anything less than using therapeutic grade essential oils for you and your pets. Research and know the source of your oils before making your purchase.
